Defense for Crimes Involving Firearms and Other Weapons

After being arrested for a weapons offense in Florida, including one that is in connection with another crime, it is important that you have an experienced lawyer to provide the strong defense you need. Florida has strict sentencing guidelines regarding weapons charges, many of which involving minimum mandatory prison sentences. Through the institution of the 10-20-Life program, these penalties have been greatly increased.

I am Walter L. "J.R." Grantham, Jr., and I have more than 20 years of experience representing individuals facing charges involving firearms, knives and other dangerous weapons. By getting involved in your case early on, I will be able to have a more complete picture of what happened and can do more to protect your rights. Prosecutors begin vigorously pursuing these cases as soon as possible and you need an attorney who will do the same for you.

10-20-Life in Florida Weapons Crimes Charges

The 10-20-Life sentencing guidelines in Florida weapons crimes charges can have individuals facing lengthy prison sentences based on the circumstances of their cases.

  • If a person is convicted of a felony charge - for instance, a burglary - while in possession of a gun, that person is subject to a minimum of 10 years in prison
  • If, during the course of that felony, the gun is discharged, the person is subject to a minimum of 20 years in prison
  • If the gun discharges and injures or kills someone as a result, the person is subject to a minimum of life in prison

Additionally, if a person has any type of felony conviction on his or her record, and is found in possession of a firearm, there is a minimum three year prison sentence. This minimum sentence is in place even if the person does not threaten to use the firearm or even show it to anyone. In Clearwater, Tampa, St. Petersburg and throughout the state, my firm can build a strong defense in order to protect your rights in the face of these stringent sentences.
